Salman Rushdie. i saw him last night with sophia. before i tell you about him, i'll tell you about the 300 or so people that went to see to him. majority were non-desi(indian/pakistani,sri lankan, guyanese, bengaladeshi, etc.,) , there were only about 12 or so desis there actually, the rest were white. there were people of different ages, college students as well as very mature audiences. there were mostly 'alternative' looking young folks, and folks that look like they would be mpr listeners. you know the kind, well-educated middle to upper-middle class. the young folks made me miss a different time in my life, a time when i was surrounded by musicians, artists, actors, etc., the people that i could talk about literature with, people that i talked about human nature with...now all i have is sophia (thank you sophia!)... i love robin but, he, at this time, is not an mpr listening-human nature analyzing-art appreciating-type of fellow, although if i have any say in it, he will be in five years! (poor hubs)

now about salman, he was charming, inspiring, interesting and above all amusing. he made us laugh, and he made us sigh upon hearing excerpts from his books and essays, he made us feel sad when he spoke of what 'home' means, and he made us thoughtful as to the meaning of 'missing the 10th of September', the day before 9/11. it was a very nice program to see live, especially in a

beautiful theater, three levels, with rounded balconies, gold details, black stage and black curtains, with a mere, albeit gorgeous eastern rug with red threadings, and a piano. i took some pictures, i'll try to put them up tomorrow.

by the way, sophia did an amazingly sweet thing. do you remember when i spoke of not receiving mail (see sept 28's post) but only bills...anyway sophia mailed me a letter. isn't that the sweetest thing?? it was so nice to see it! i haven't received a letter in 3 years and 3 years of so before that...

i would love to have pen pals, but who? who wants to be pen pals with me??

the world's funniest joke and why.
