books

i have been reading alot lately.

read interpreter of maladies, by jhumpa lahiri for the desi book club. wonderfully written, simple yet of value. i loved the many, many different characters, and she wrote as if she indeed was each and every one. filled with details, but without poetry, thus allowing you to think that these characters are as they are, not characters in a story but the ones you may have seen on the bus or on the street (if you are in india, for some of the characters, or in america, for the others). anyway, i loved reading this stories, some more than othes...but altogether a wonderful experience. (i was warned of the first story prior to reading it, because of my recent experience...but in fact, i felt comforted to read it somewhat...although i hated the way it ended, it was not because i hated the story but the idea that it is in fact a reality and it hurt my heart a little to read it).

also read beach boy, by ardashir vakhil. this book is a little harder to describe other than what they have written here...but i really did like reading this book. although, i am not sure if the voice maintained it's child voice, but i did want to read more of the adventures of the main character, a young boy. i wanted to continue to read what happens to the smaller characters, his neighbors as well as his mother and father. again, i am not sure if the experiences gotten and the thoughts felt and actions taken are those of an eight year old, but the characters he meets are so real and fresh and multi-dimensional(complex yet appealing). cyrus himself, the main character, is interesting and complex himself, the fact that he is willing to experience so much in the short time that we know him...makes for a good read.

the final book that i read, was lovely bones by alice sebold. i just finished it this morning, so the effects are very strong. i loved most of the book...although, it truly feels strange to say that i 'loved' reading of a young girl getting raped, then killedl, then living on in the afterlife to tell us her story. it must be told that this topic affects me very much, children and the crimes against them, as a child psychology major and as a human being. but what i liked about the story again, as in the beach boy, were the characters. at the end of the story, i felt as if i understood them, and i felt that they would be alright after what happened to their friend, daughter, sister. i wanted to know more about them, what happens to them...which i think is a testament to how important these characters were to the life of the girl who died. i really could not put the book down, and i am so very glad that i was given the gift of knowing what happened to the rapist/murderer...which of course in reality, in our real world, one would not.
----------------

i am getting ever so tired of talking and not being heard. how much can one really take of that before not talking any more?

(problems in my personal life are so aggravating that i cannot write it down)
