i've been watching some amazing movies lately:

mystic river--->what acting. i love all of these actors actually, tim robbins (ever since jacob's ladder), kevin bacon, sean penn(wonderful), laura linney. laurence fishburne's character is not a big part, but it is well played, and marcia gay harden's character is a big part and she definitely made the story. clint eastwood does a very good job of awakening the characters, all of them, bringing them all to life. each with their own troubles, and each impacted by the death of a young girl. i loved this movie, although at the end, there was a little something missing, it was otherwise outstanding. great story. sadness, heartwarming, philosophical, touching, and whatever else makes a good movie. a movie different than the other garbage out there. By the way, the story is about a young girl who is killed, and it is a whodunit, but it is also about 3 young boys who face something horrendous, and one of them is the father of the child who is killed, it is also about a small community in boston.

whale rider-->. a story about a young girl(i definitely hope to see her in more movies) in New zealand who when born is the twin that survives in birth. the other twin was hoped to be the chief of the town in which they live. but during the birth the male dies, as well as their mother. the young girl then is raised reluctantly by her grandfather, although lovingly, and by her grandmother. she has all the makings of a leader, but her grandfather can't see it. i loved it because i was able to see a new culture, the Maori of New Zealand, and the beauty of the land itself, as well as very good acting by a young girl. great story, about gaining love and respect regardless of age and sex...as well as about family.

the last movie i saw was bhoot. a hindi movie, with my fave nana patekar, and a guy i've seen in a few movies ajay devgan (who i thought acted very well), and urmila (very good performance). a hindi ghost story...who would have thought. i loved that it was not a typical bollywood movie, no songs in sight (yay!!). there were times when i got frustrated by repitition, but otherwise, i was spooked and i was intrigued by the ending, as well as by the look of bombay. i am definitely going to check out bombay someday...back to the movie...it worked in keeping me watching, and i was amazed by how well urmila acted, (as well as ajay) which definitely is the reason why all of this worked. it could so easily have not worked, but it did...thankfully for the small characters made the movie as well...the maid (seema biswas) and the demon-get-rid-of-er person (rekha...who was beautiful, i thought).
